Another year has passed and it’s been a busy one! The activity of the group this year has been in multiple areas:
1. Enforcement of Articles 6 and 24 of the Greer Community Plan. GCI members continue their ongoing communication with Apache County leadership and attendance at Planning & Zoning meetings to stay up to date on current issues.
2. Area Fire Risk and the many challenges it presents. Greer Fire Captain Joseph Orona spoke at our Annual Meeting and our website has been updated with links to information and resources regarding property owner education and fire prevention. We had two members of the Forest service speak at our annual meeting as well and a working group has been formed to strategize about perimeter mitigation and options for fast-track strategic forest management and funding for such management. Want to participate with the working group? Let us know!
3. Property Insurance Challenges. GCI has been gathering information and networking with stakeholders regarding this issue. Ongoing efforts include investigating public policy opportunities, strategies to improve Greer’s global community risk profile, and strategies to support property owners. Be sure to check out our Insurance Resource page on the website.
4. Improve Recreational Areas and the Greer Fishery including the Little Colorado River and Greer Lakes. We have been active with Arizona Game and Fish to improve access to the Little Colorado River, improve foot and boat access to the Greer Lakes, and reviewing lake water drawdown schedules and other recreational functions.
5. On the horizon: There is an upcoming public hearing for a major plat amendment and property development on Main Street and it remains to be seen what the details of that project will be. GCI is mobilizing to keep that process transparent and to keep the community informed. Stay tuned.
If any of these issues matter to you, please get involved! Greer needs you. Please share your time, your skills, your resources, your love for Greer. The more we hear from you and the more you participate, the more powerful all our voices are.
Last But Not Least!!!
Dave Bennett Retirement
It is with great affection and gratitude that we announce the retirement of Dave Bennett from the GCI Board of Directors. Dave is a GCI founding member and has worked tirelessly over the past 26 years to preserve the landscape and environment in our beloved community. Please read his Letter of Resignation on the website Blog for a moving summary of his time and efforts on behalf of Greer. Thank you, Dave! Enjoy your new-found free time! You will be missed.
Farewell and thank you, Ed Biggers!
Ed was a founding GCI member and remained a board member until his passing in 2024, playing key roles in our interaction with the Forest Service on the Black River Land Exchange matter 20 years ago and the many projects involving zoning law revisions and land use. He was a key liaison to the Center for Biological Diversity, a national environmental organization based in Tucson.
Ed, former President of the Missile System Group at Hughes (which later became Raytheon), was a long-time voice of reason and common sense and devoted exceptional amounts of time and energy to keeping Greer awesome.
Both Ed and Dave will be missed for their wisdom and
extensive knowledge of Greer land use, history and culture.
Once again, a call out to all members of the Greer community!
Be a voice in Greer!
Membership to GCI is free to anyone who cares about Greer: Full time residents, part time residents, property owners, business owners, community leaders. While membership is free and all are welcome to join our work, it takes funding to cover expenses related to our efforts. The Greer Coalition Board is asking you for your financial support for the coming year, 2025. This annual fundraiser is for organizational expenses as well as to cover costs for professional and legal expertise as needed as land issues vital to the community arise.
