Attention Greer Homeowners!
The Greer Firewise & Wildfire Mitigation Group, together with the Greer Fire District, is working to make Greer a recognized Firewise Community.
Our goal is to improve public safety and reduce wildfire risks by encouraging residents to follow Firewise practices, such as creating defensible spaces and using fire-resistant landscaping, to help prevent the spread of wildfires and protect homes and property.
To achieve Firewise certification, every Greer homeowner must work to improve their property’s fire safety by removing hazards like dead trees, dry brush, pine needles, and other fuels.
While wildfires can’t be prevented, reducing these risks helps protect homes, the community, and lives.
Most homes burn not from direct flames, but from embers igniting nearby flammable materials such as pine needles, brush, wood decks, or rugs.
What Homeowners Can Do:
Limit the amount of flammable vegetation immediately around your home.
Rake pine needles and remove anything flammable away from your home at least 5’ away.
Never stack wood or other flammable materials under a deck or porch.
Remove dead vegetation and debris from under decks and porches & between board joints.
Trim tree branches that overhang your home, porch or deck.
Inspect your roof. Make sure there aren’t any pine needles or other debris on it or in gutters. Metal, composite shingles or tiles offer the best protection. Be sure to repair and/or replace any loose or missing shingles, tiles or screws to prevent ember penetration. Roof, attic and basement vents should be tightly screened in with 1/3” or smaller mesh screens.
Beyond this area, create a 30' defensible space around your home that is raked & cleared of deadfall, firewood and standing dead but leave a fine layer of needles or grass as it helps keep moisture in the ground and also assists with preventing erosion.
Cut down and remove dead trees within at least 30’ of your home and prune branches of large trees up at least 6 feet from the ground.
Other recommendations include but are not limited to: noncombustible siding, roofing or decking materials, noncombustible landscaping and vegetation, clearing your entire property of deadfall and standing dead trees.
Our goal is to achieve 100% participation and become FireWise certified!
